CO2 laser skin resurfacing is the gold standard when it comes to skin quality.

It helps with many age related skin concerns, like sun damage, wrinkles, open pores, skin elasticity, scars, stretch marks and intimate rejuvenation.

What is a CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?

There’s a big difference between CO2 (carbon dioxide) lasers and other lasers used to refresh the skin. The most significant difference is that CO2 lasers are ablative, meaning they remove the uppermost layer of skin.

Non-ablative lasers keep the skin intact and don’t cause any damage to it.

Since our CO2 laser resurface the skin by vaporizing it, it is more aggressive than other lasers and requires some recovery process, but the results are unparalleled. A CO2 works deeper than other devices, which means the results are also more dramatic.

How Does It Work?

Using a fractionated version of laser energy, the laser creates precise energy channels. These channels make a pattern on the skin that treats the skin while stimulating collagen production, new cell growth, and improving the skin’s tone and texture to erase the common signs of aging.

The laser uses short pulses of energy not to damage the skin unnecessarily. The entire treatment is very controlled so that the light emitted onto the skin safely removes the uppermost layer of skin with minimal heat-related damage.

While the skin may appear red, swollen, and even crusty, the final results won’t be noticeable until it is fully healed, so expect a few weeks to see your new, fresh skin.

Benefits of a CO2 Resurfacing

There are several benefits of getting a CO2 skin laser treatment which is why it remains a popular procedure. For those with severe sun and skin damage, scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and textural changes to the skin, a CO2 laser can drastically reduce the appearance of these concerns.

It can also help improve skin laxity, too.

Some of the main benefits of CO2 laser skin treatments include:

  • Increased Collagen Production: As part of the healing process, the skin creates new, fresh collagen, which results in smoother, plumper, tighter-looking skin. New collagen also makes a smoother visage.
  • New Skin Cell Growth: As the body cleans out the old, damaged cells in their place, it creates new skin cells for rejuvenated skin that look healthier. In some cases, a CO2 can heal precancerous lesions like actinic keratosis.
  • Fewer Lines and Wrinkles: The new, healthy collagen can give plumpness to the skin making the signs of aging less apparent.
  • Firmer skin
  • More evenly toned skin: As the ablative CO2 laser breaks down pigmentation in the skin, it creates a more uniform skin tone with fewer spots and discoloration.
  • Reduces scars: Again, new, healthy, fresh skin cells and collagen replaces the damaged ones that are responsible for scars.

Before the Treatment

What Skin Problems Are Improved With CO2?

During Your Treatment

First, Dr. Walters will evaluate your skin and determine the role of the CO2 laser in your rejuvenation process and if it’s in the right condition to do a resurfacing. Sometimes we need to prepare the skin with specific skincare and sunscreen to reduce the possibility of side effects.

During Your Treatment

During Your Treatment

When you arrive at our office, we will apply a strong topical anesthetic for your comfort. Next, Dr. Walters will begin passing the Edge One CO2 laser handpiece over your skin. The treatment shouldn’t be painful, but sometimes you may experience a heat sensation. The treatment takes about 90 minutes, including the preparation

After the Treatment

Your skin will look red and swollen for the first 48 hours and will require diligent aftercare.

The next 3-7 days you will form scabs in forms of patches that will gradually come off when you wash the skin.

During this recuperation process we’ll have several follow up consults to make sure your skin is healing well.

Who is NOT a Candidate?

  • Dark skins: Pigmented skins tends to heal with hyperpigmentation and side effects are more common.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding woman.
  • Patients being treated with isotretinoin (Accutane).
  • Any background of skin conditions (bad scarring, autoimmune, etc)
  • Active skin infection.

Is there Downtime?

How Long the Results Last?

YES, a CO2 laser can offer more dramatic results than other treatments, but it also involves a more demanding recovery period.

Usually the recovery period last 7-10 days and it will continue to heal slowly over the following month.

Recovery involves staying indoors or with limited sun exposure, no exercise & application of specific post laser healing creams.

How Long the Results Last?

How Long the Results Last?

Laser skin resurfacing offers long-lasting results, but, unfortunately, the skin will continue to age and be exposed to damaging elements.

Depending on the skin type and severity of the condition that is being treated we recommend repeating the treatment every 6 to 12 months.
