Botox is a non-surgical treatment that smooths and prevents wrinkles caused by excessive muscle contractions. It's a purified toxin that is extracted from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum and approved by the FDA in 2002 for the cosmetic reduction of facial wrinkles.
Botox can also be used to treat medical conditions such as migraines, bruxism, excessive sweating, oily skin, acne, rosacea and open pores.
When we use our facial muscles to elevate the eyebrows, smile, concentrate, squint or other expressions; a nerve impulse is sent to these muscles instructing them to contract. After years of frequent contractions combined with environmental and lifestyle factors, the collagen breaks down and permanent lines are formed especially in the upper face; forehead lines, eyes (crow's feet), nose (bunny lines)or frown lines (11's).
Botox interrupts this process leaving the muscles relaxed and the skin less wrinkled with a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Walters will perform a comprehensive facial examination that thoroughly evaluates the shape of your face, the presence of wrinkles and lines as well as the overall quality of your skin to determine the role of Botox in your treatment.
A key component of this examination is to confirm that the wrinkles of concern are the result of muscle activity and not volume loss, which would need a different or complementary treatment.
After taking photos and signing the consent, your skin will be cleaned and Botox will be injected to the targeted areas using very fine needles.
Immediately after you may notice small bumps and redness that usually disappears in 10-15 minutes and Dr. Walters will give you instructions on what to do and what to avoid.
1 day after the treatment
Most people will not experience any sign that show they’ve had Botox, in some patients minor bruising can be visible.
1 week after the treatment
You are likely to start to see results, with the full effect seen at 10-14 days. The treated area will appear smoother and look more refreshed.
1 month after the treatment
A month down the track, your Botox® will still be very effective. Some people will have a very small amount of movement return, although this differs for everyone and also depends on the area treated.
3-4 months after the treatment
The effects of Botox start to wear off and you will start to see a gradual return of movement. Time for more Botox!
There are many areas in the face & neck that can be treated with botox: the size, shape and strength of the target muscles vary between patients and for this reason the cost and dose used to get the cosmetic / medical effect will also be different. Botox is measured in units and the cost will depend on the total amount
By treating the upper face, we achieve a balance between the muscles. We reduce the strength of those that make us look old, angry or sad and we increase the strength of muscles that make us look young, rested and healthy. It's not only about reducing wrinkles, but also having a healthier appearance with a natural look.
Horizontal lines on the forehead reflect fatigue and low eyebrows may show anger. With Botox we can slightly raise the eyebrows and reduce wrinkles for a healthier, more relaxed and younger appearance.
The muscles between the eyebrows are very strong and when we frown or squint we generate folds & wrinkles that eventually will become permanent. When activated, the eyebrows drop aswell causing an angry appearance.
With Botox we can soften this expression and raise the eyebrows for a more softer and natural look.
The wrinkles at the corner of the eyes are caused when we smile or squint. They can be charming or they can add years to your look.
Botox helps relax this muscle to open the eye and show a striking rested look.
Botox can be injected in the lower facial muscles using advanced techniques to relax the muscles that can contribute to lines around the mouth, dimpled chin, downward corners of the mouth, gummy smile, jawline, lips and vertical neck bands for a more balanced face, complementing your upper face botox.
Botox injections are applied at 2 to 5 strategic points in the muscles responsible for elevating the upper lip. This method is painless and effective can last between 4 to 6 months.
When the muscles responsible for chewing are very strong and big (due to constant grinding, tension, etc.) they create a more squared lower face. By injecting Botox into the masseter muscles we manage to relax them and reduce the size of the lower part of the face.
Botox is a very effective treatment for dimpled chins. When injected, it can help reduce the appearance of dimples by relaxing the mentalis muscle, which is located in the chin and below the lower lip.
Vertical neck bands result in a long, string-like appearance on either side of the neck.
The injection of Botox is used to relax and smooth the platysma muscles, resulting in a much improved appearance.
A lip flip is a popular procedure that makes your lips look fuller without increasing the volume of your lips, we inject a low dose of botox into the upper lip border to make it ‘flip’ and enhance the shape and achieve a fuller upper lip.
When you have a migraine, your body releases substances called neurotransmitters and molecules that are associated with pain.
Botox interferes with the transmission of these substances, typically where the nerves and muscles meet. Researchers think that when Botox is injected into the muscles around the face, head and neck, it is taken up by the nerves and interferes with pain-associated neurotransmission.
Chronic clenching of the jaw or grinding of the teeth, a condition known as bruxism, can have a variety of problematic effects. It can cause pain and tension in the jaw, chronic headaches, earaches, facial pain and damage to your teeth. Botox can help alleviate the symptoms of bruxism by relaxing the masseter muscles.
This condition is called hyperhidrosis, it affects around 30-50% of the population, some have a genetic or stress underlying cause, most of the time the cause is unknown.
Botox will block some of the sweating glands so they can produce less sweat and bring you back to normal sweating. This is a very safe and quick treatment that can give you up to 1 year of results!
After facial paralysis, many recover and others are left with sequelae. With advanced Botox techniques, certain muscles can be relaxed to balance the strength in the face and appear more symmetrical.
Microtox is a new approach to rejuvenation and skin tightening of the face using a very diluted Botox. Instead of injecting it into the muscle itself, microtox is injected just beneath the surface of the skin. This technique is used to help many conditions found on the skin; fine lines, uneven texture, enlarged pores, oily skin, sebum production, facial sweating, flushing & rosacea.
