WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is a purified toxin that is extracted from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum with many medical indications since the 1980´s, and approved by the FDA in 2002 for the cosmetic reduction of facial wrinkles.
This non-surgical treatment will smooth and prevents wrinkles caused by excessive muscle contractions in the forehead, eyes, (crow´s feet), glabela (the 11´s), nose and with advanced techniques the midface, lower face and neck.
Botox is also used to treat medical conditions such as migraines, bruxism, excessive sweating, oily skin, acne, rosacea and open pores.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
When we use our facial muscles to elevate the eyebrows, smile, concentrate, squint or other expressions; a nerve impulse is sent to these muscles instructing them to contract. After years of frequent contractions combined with environmental and lifestyle factors, the collagen breaks down and permanent lines are formed. Botox interrupts this process by relaxing the muscles while still leaving it functional to allow you to look natural, rested and rejuvenated with less wrinkles.
DURING THE TREATMENT
During your initial consultation, Dr. Walters will perform a comprehensive facial examination that thoroughly evaluates the shape of your face, the presence of wrinkles and lines as well as the overall quality of your skin to determine the role of Botox in your treatment.
A key component of this examination is to confirm that the wrinkles of concern are the result of muscle activity and not volume loss, which would need a different or complementary treatment.
After taking photos and signing the consent, your skin will be cleaned and Botox will be injected to the targeted areas using very fine needles.
TIMELINE
Immediately after you may notice small bumps and redness that usually disappears in 10-15 minutes and Dr. Walters will give you instructions on what to do and what to avoid.
1 day after the treatment
Most people will not experience any sign that show they’ve had Botox, in some patients minor bruising can be visible.
1 week after the treatment
You will start to feel the botox is starting to act, you might see the skin is getting better, with less wrinkles and with a more relaxed appearance, however the full effect may take up to 14 days, in case we need to do a touch up this is the perfect moment to do so.
1 month after the treatment
A month down the track, your Botox will still be very effective with the maximum results, smooth skin, improvement of fine lines and wrinkles and a complete muscle balance.
3-4 months after the treatment
The effects of Botox start to wear off and you will start to see a gradual return of movement. Time for more Botox!
